The Ph.D. program is aimed at preparing biostatisticians who can create novel ways of solving challenges in public health and biological sciences. Graduates of the Ph.D. program will also be able to design and analyze public health and biomedical research studies using statistical and epidemiological approaches. Finally, graduates of the Ph.D. program will be well prepared to work as collaborators or team leaders on biomedical and public health research initiatives.
The program requires knowledge of statistics and probability theory, as well as introductory and advanced statistical methods and theory, and epidemiologic study design foundations. Doctoral program graduates will have completed a doctoral dissertation that focuses on the development of a new methodology or the novel application of statistical approaches to a health research challenge. Such statistical approach invention or development is anticipated as part of the student's dissertation and must result in publication in a recognized scientific journal.
